Pig iron

Pig iron. — iron alloy with carbon (more than 2% С) is divided into unalloyed and alloyed, containing chrome, nickel, manganese and other alloying elements.

As to the structure there are distinguished white iron (with white fracture), where the carbon exists in the form of cement carbide, and grey iron (with grey fracture), where the carbon exists in general in the form of graphite. Grey iron is divided into the foundry-iron, nodular, malleable, heat-resisting, heat-resistant, corrosion resistant and bearing cast iron.

The pig iron is intended for further processing into steel or recasting in iron foundries at castings production. The pig iron in combination with steel scrap and ferroalloys is used for steelmaking and partially in fusion mixture for iron casting.

Depending on silicon mass fraction there is produced:

• pig iron for steelmaking production of grades P 1, P 2;
• pig iron for casting production of grades PL 1, PL 2;
• pig phosphoric pig iron of grades PF 1, PF 2, PF 3;
• pig high-quality cast iron of grades PVK 1, PVK 2, PVK 3.

The pig iron is produced in pigs without curl, with one or two curls. The pig thickness in curl point shall be not more than 50mm. The pig weight shall be not more than 18 kg. The number of iron pigs scrap shall not be more than 4% of the lot weight. The scrap includes parts not more than 2 kg.
